I just purchased my 1st Hybrid. A 2013 Prius II. Excited about the new car. I eventually want to get a navigation system put in, I didn't think I'd care about having one coming from a 2006 Honda Accord Base model, but I think it is something I do want.
Congratulations on getting your Prius. When I purchased mine (2009, Gen II) I looked at another (same mileage, about the same condition and the same price) although the other Prius was a nice colour (Pine Green) it had BlueTooth and built-in Nav, but I already had a Garmin GPS 276C which I bought years ago and used extensively in my Corolla DX Wagon, and being used to using the Garmin, and being able to easily update it via my PC, whereas the nav system in the other Prius needed CD-based updates, and although I'm sure the dealer would have got me the updates (for $$ I expect) I ended up with the Metallic Grey "ChuggyPig" (with the Touring Package, nicer wheels, HID headlamps and window deflectors) . If I were you I'd start looking around (eBay) for a used Garmin (Nuvi or 276C) - Here's a pic after I fabricated a sunshade for the Garmin: Welcome to PriusChat and have fun with your new Prius! - Wil
Many miles in safety and good health. We here think you made a wise choice, lol, as we tend to stick together. Check with your local traffic peeps about mounting a gps or phone to the windshield as some places don't allow that. Might have to get a dash mounted thingy for any gps solution that you decide upon. Yes I have GPS on my phone if that's what you mean, but unfortunately it doesn't work all that well for me and signal is lost a lot of the time it is frustrating lol. Not sure if it's my phone, the area, or my ATT service. :/
If your phone is more than 2 years old, it's probably the phone. The Google map app on my Samsung Galaxy 4 is in most respects better than either my Garmin OR the built-in NAV in my C. I'm with Verizon but don't think the carrier has any bearing on the GPS function.
I also recommend the Garmin. The best mount we found for our purposes is the Mountek CD slot mount at Amazon for about $22.
Maybe this would be a good place to mention that I have several GPS units for sale. Two of them are fairly recent Garmins. The other two are old and will go for pretty near the shipping cost.
Thanks again. I'm going to hold off on the GPS for a little bit, not in a rush, for the most part my phone will get me where I need to go (with trouble) lol. And yes my phone is about 2yrs old, glad to know that might be the issue. My weatherbeater mats came in yesterday. Nice fit. I'll probably order some more things for the car next month. A little bit at a time.
