OK. 1st week ~ 300 miles. Only one big trip of 50 miles each way. Roughly 150 miles on gas, 150 miles on electricity. It says my EV range is now 13.9 miles. 150 miles on electricity means about 11 chargeups at 44 cents a chargeup ~ $4.75 It says I saved ~ 2 gallons of gasoline ~ $8 So I saved $8-4.75=$3.25. $3.25 *52 ~ $170. 300miles * 52 weeks ~ 15,000 miles driven per year. If the calculator is right, they are estimating that while in HV mode, I'm getting 75 mpg, which is about 20 mpg more than my 2010 prius. Thus, the 2010 prius would need 7500/55 mpg = 136 gallons and the PIP would need 7500/75 = 100 gallons. leading to a savings of ~ 36 gallons *$4/gal ~ $150 - nearly the same amount as charging gets you. So, grand total savings over the Prius 2010 annually ~ $320. What I like best about my PiP? 1) It's cool to drive in EV mode. 2) Reducing the number of times I have to go to a gas station, 3) knowing I'm contributing (in a very small way) to reducing oil consumption.
