So I bought a prius about a month ago (used 2005) and I'm gonna do the oil change tomorrow. It's closed to 60000 miles. I was just wondering what services should I look at or need to look at besides regular oil change? I looked at the filters. Those r fine.
I also recommend changing the ATF in the transaxle, other than that I would go with the Toyota schedule: http://www.toyota.com/t3Portal/document/omms/05ToyAllMS_MS0012/pdf/01omsour/2005/schedmai/51w1smt.pdf (60,000 miles is on page 14 of the PDF, page 11 of the manual)
Hi all, thanks for the replies. Appreciate them. Transaxle fluid is the same as automatic transmission fluid right? I usually get my oil change at Meineke. Can I get the transaxle fluid change there?
^^^ You MUST use Toyota ATF WS. Do NOT use any other transmission fluid (e.g. Dexron). I would also test the 12 volt battery via the procedure at Weird stuff happening? MPGs dropping? Test The Battery | PriusChat after the car has sat overnight. Tell us the voltages levels at each step. We should get 3 of them. Since the engine on the Prius isn't started by the 12 volt, you will NEVER get symptoms of slow cranking or starter being enable to turn the engine (Prius has no dedicated starter motor). If it's still on the original 12 volt, it's almost certainly toast now and you'll experience weird problems soon, if not already.
If I tell Meineke to use that (TOYOTA ATF WS) is it safe to do the transmission change over there or I HAVE TO take it to the dealer?
There is no real reason it has to be the dealer. You want to get 4 quarts of Toyota ATF WS and 2 transaxle gaskets at the Toyota dealer's parts counter, then take them to Meineke, with these instructions. Drain and Fill is all you need. (In complicated automatic transmissions some ATF may be 'hidden' and need a flush, in a Prius there is almost no ATF that is not ready to drain out} What is a Transmission Flush?
