oddest thing - my 2011 Prius with 198,000 miles had the parking lights turn on by themselves yesterday at 5pm - dusk. The car was used earlier and parked. I only know this from security cameras. At about 6amt the hazards came on (still dark). The hazards will not turn off. As soon as I moved the car, the trac control, brake, tirepressure, came on. No check engine or hybrid warning. Drove car and it seemed to perform normally. I took to local garage and the Snap ON scanner only found a wheen speed sensor code. My daughter said car worked fine with no lights before she parked it yesterday. We cleared all codes and I disconnected the battery, but nothing has made a difference - dash still lit up and hazards flashing. It is damp from rain. Any ideas are welcome!
So the wheel speed sensor code is side specific it told you which side it was and when you went and looked at it if that happened what did anybody see no wire snatch loose anything like that?. So then the next step is to undo the 10 mm bolt or screw or whatever and pull the sensor out of the hub and look at the end of it is it full of crap now's a good time to clean it off with some brake clean and rag then you can look down through the little hole and you can see the tone ring looks like a metal circle with a bunch of cuts in it evenly spaced cuts that's what it should look like as you rotate the hub around and around any big gaps or funny business That's a problem. Everything look good put the clean sensor back in clear the code see what you have now if that sensor was real dirty you might want to go around and clean them all just because.
i looked and did not see any evidence of rodents chewing. Not a problem I have had either. The car was sitting in a driveway and the parking lights just popped on. Then 12 hours later the hazards and they wont turn off. Coplay, PA is about 90 miles north of Philadelphia. small suburban town.
It is a rear spped sensor - I replaced them both about 2.5 years ago. The speed sensors on a gen 3 prius are inside the hub, so you cant remove them. It would be odd that the speed sensor never through a code while driving but came on when car sitting in driveway? At dusk the parking lights popped on and then 12 hours later the the hazards.
yea. It is very wet right now. I am going to check the wiring on the speed sensor, but would that cause the hazards to act up and not turn off? my gut is feeling like a skid control module short.
No, the speed sensor wiring should not cause this problem. If I remember correctly, it is an electrical corrion problem on a module inside the brake actuator. Paging @ChapmanF He can explain it to you and provide links to similar threads in this forum.
The car knows all the lights are on like the brake actuator is suspect and well of course it is because everything that suspect is built into the brake actuator wonderful stuff.
There is a wire that connects the hazard switch to the brake ECU. I've never been quite sure why; the manual describes it as an input, so for some reason the brake ECU cares about whether you have the hazards turned on. But there is a known story with these brake ECUs going bad inside in some way that pulls down the voltage on that 'input' so it acts as an output, and activates the hazards. What seems to be the most common way it happens is that input gets bridged somehow to the pin right next to it, which supplies a pulse that pulses faster the faster the car moves, and so you get hazards that flash faster and faster as the car picks up speed. Funny, unless the car it happens to is yours. But that's not the only way it ever happens. If the wire just gets plain shorted to ground, it'll just activate the flashers, and they'll flash normally. More information is here and here. If the hazard lights at the four corners are lighting up, but not flashing, the problem might have to be somewhere elseāthe circuit described above just activates the hazard flash relay, which has 'flashing' behavior built in. If the lights are steadily on, I'd suspect something wrong in that relay itself, or downstream of it.
all four corners are flashing. started on thier own while vehicle was off. The parking lights came on by themselves first and then hazards about 12 hours later. It has been rainy and damp, so the corrusion idea seems reasonable. I assume first step to to remove wiper cowl and inspect the skid module connection?
I don't think the parking lights have any connection to the skid ECU, so there might be a corrosion or other problem somewhere else, or more widespread.
my daugher that drives the car just mentioned that at times the wipers did not go on right away. a 5 second delay or so. This is concerning in that there could be a corrosion issue in other harnesses as well
some updates: When i let the car sit yesterday afternoon for a few hours I was able to turn off the hazards (I just left them blinking). The car worked fine with no traction/skid/abs/brake lights. This lasted about a block and then hazards came back as well as all warning lights. I disconnected the negative last night and when I reconnected today I was able to turn off the hazards - they came back on in about a minute with the car not moving or starting. When I removed the ECU plug on the acutator the hazards went out and then they functioned perfectly . I blew out the connections and used some electrical connection cleaner, but lights came back on when I reconnected. Although it is a Northeast car, the connections are not corroded or any spiders. Based on this, I believe it points to a short in the brake actuator?
Makes sense to me as far as the hazards are concerned, though (as I mentioned in #12) I don't see how that would explain the parking lights. Could be a separate problem.
the parking lights are an odd twist as they went on just as dusk hit. The lights were set to automatic, but I am pretty sure we never had this issue before or the battery would have died. I am going to experiment with that issue tonight as I will set the lights back to auto and see what happens. I am going to look around for any wire shorts while i have the wiper cowl off, but I am not optomistic.
maybe inconsequential, but I checked the connection of the speed sensor at the rear wheel - it does not click in tight. It is in place but does not fully connect. I have a feeling it may have been like this for awhile, and may explain the Scanner codes althoough I did not have any warning lights until the current situation. No matter what I do with the plug the hazards do not stop though. I would have expected them to shutoff when I pulled the plug off the sensor if the sensor was the problem.
