So my mechanic is telling me I need to replace my inner tie rods on my 2016 Prius, It does have 330K KM on it. He was saying they don't sell that part separately instead I have to buy the steering rack at $2000 not including labor. This seems absolutely nuts to me that I can't get an inner tie rod separately. Is there a separate part number for the inner tie rod? or am I face with paying $2K + labor..
Parts catalog Figure 45-05, Front Steering Gear and Link, shows the available parts. Only the tie rod ends, boots, and small parts (clips, bolts, etc.) are available separately from the steering gear assembly, for which the list price (at this writing, in the U.S.) is $716.90. Without having seen the car, I can’t comment on which parts (if any) might need replacing, but I endorse @LiamLe's and @alanclarkeau's kind suggestions to get a second opinion.
Yes it’s true, there is no part number for the inner tie rod ends. Now the rack costs me $500-600 new from the dealer so you might want to find another mechanic. Also if you don’t have a clunking sound or a gap in the tie rod ends then don’t replace it. You can get a used low mileage rack from eBay for around $150-300 and just swap the inner tie rod ends on yours. I’ve done this with no problems.
