Can I have a sanity check on front wiper replacement for my 2017 Prius II. Last time I bought them OEM through a dealer and replaced them. But this time my car "failed inspection" because I needed new wipers so I just paid the shop there to replace them. When I used the wipers the longer arm would clip the shorter arm. I measured them and the long arm was 28 in and the short was 17 in. I don't know the brand they used but they did mention Bosch, so I looked it up, and the default autozone and Bosch website both suggested 28 in and 15 in blades.

I brought the car back and showed them the issue. They brought the car in and came back out with the wipers replaced (again) and they didn't clip eachother. As a sanity check, I measured them and they now are 26 in and 17 in. I asked them to replace them with the proper blades lengths that the manufacturer said was compatible. They said they fit the windshield so there is no issue. Fast forward 5 min of he and I going around in circles where I said I just want to see where it says these are compatible with my car and him saying look, it fits and claiming you can have one be longer than recommended if you have the other be shorter than recommended. IN the end it's another ~$60 to just get the proper wipers so I left since we weren't getting anywhere.

SO here I am asking for a sanity check...should I have stood my ground and gotten wipers that the manufacturer fits my care, or is that more of a guideline and if one is a few in longer the other can be a few in shorter? I understand different brands can be different lengths, but he never told me the brand he ended up using.

i doubt you would have gotten anywhere with a person like that.
if this is a state inspection station, i would file a complaint with the proper authority.

Yep, call bureau of automotive repair and local consumer group. Leave negative yelp review of the business - 'removes OEM parts and replaces them with different sized parts. Doesn't look up specifications or match-up replacement parts for proper fit and functionality. Caused me to fail state inspection'.

More importantly, were you able to pass state inspections after the adjustment?

FWIW: 28 & 15 sounds right. Those aftermarket blades are universal fit, but I prefer the OEM's. Smoother, doesn't lift or skip in heavy rain or cross wind conditions. I replaced mine with commercial silicone inserts. The OEM lasted only 18 months. I'm currently 2+ years on these silicone inserts.

This was an independent shop, not a Toyota dealership? They failed your wipers and installed some ill-fitting aftermarket ones? Do you still have the original blade assemblies?

One way or another I'd want to OEM blade assemblies and wiper inserts.
