I love my new used Prius 06! ( I bought it from my Dad.) I thought I knew all the little ins and outs but I am stuck on this one. First - both keys worked 4 months ago. Then I put the spare smart key away. Now I tried to use the spare and does not work. I can open door with little key and stick fob in the hole but the car won't start. I changed batteries. Checked, V = 3.2 which is normal for new battery but key still does not work. I did not run key through the washing machine. Any suggestions? ps my local locksmith cut me a new door key using a Jeep blank. Works perfectly! Not that I need it but he wanted to test the blank.
Does the spare smartkey start the car when placed in the slot in the dash? And do the buttons work, or is it just the smartkey functions that don't work? I will assume you replaced the old battery with a brand new one. I have had problems in the past with batteries that have been sitting around awhile.
Thanks for your help. The first thing I did after changing the battery was to put the key in the slot/hole. The car will not start. The other smart key works fine, If you put the fob in the hole it should work whether it remotely unlocks the door or notI just left the spare sitting for 4 months in the drawer. I stepped on the brake, I have no other RF interference. Side-by-side, one fob works, the other does not. Can the programming become corrupted?
The key has a code which is factory burned in and is unchangeable, and you actually are programming this code into the car. How that could fail in the key is a mystery to me. I haven't heard of that failure mode before. So I guess its possible the car end is corrupted. I don't know if reprogramming the car end would fix the other smartkey functions or not. I might give the dealer a call and see if you can get any suggestion from them or you could try reprogramming the car to that spare key. Here's a thread on that if you want to try it: http://priuschat.com/forums/knowled...lly-how-program-non-sks-key-fob-detailed.html I guess if it were mine I might try reprogramming the car. If that doesn't work I'd guess the key is toast or maybe the dealer could fix it with special programming tools they have. Either way it may be expensive. Good luck and keep us posted on what you find out.
