Poor Silver took it on the chin again last week, while parked right in front of the house. The first time was an errant shopping cart with a disappearing passenger, and this time it was a disappearing car that backed up too far in a three point turn involving the neighbour's driveway. Fortunately, there were witnesses, who kindly wrote the licence plate in the dirt on the windshield. They couldn't have done that with a clean car, now could they? Fearing retribution from the three...uh...'ethnic' young people, the couple has refused to give their names as witnesses. (My wife spoke to them shortly afterwards, but did not see the accident herself) Sadly, my 'new' insurance company does not cover hit and runs, so the money I've saved the last two years on insurance will now go towards repairing the damage. "Self insured" is the appropriate euphemism here. We'll find out this afternoon what the cost is, and how the two insurance companies will handle it.
Ouch! Sorry to hear about Silver. Even sorrier to hear that the witnesses aren't willing to finish what they started when they wrote the plate number in the dirt.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(hyo silver @ Sep 11 2006, 04:13 PM) </div> Say WHAT??? Does that mean not at ALL, or just because you didn't get uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage?...
Finally, a valid argument for ethnic cleansing. Assault, robbery and fraud are one thing; Priuscide quite another.
In CA, one may post a bond of (I believe) $50,000 in lieu of carrying insurance on one's vehicle. I trust this, or some variation, is to what you're referring by, "self insured..."?
It's the matter of the police now isn't it? A while ago, I posted here on PC a similar incident involving my dad's Camry. The only difference is that I'm sure they were drunk as there was a party a few houses up and empty and broken bottles litter the front lawns of neighbouring houses. Luckily, the driver fessed up (eventually) and his insurance paid. The damage? Two crumpled doors and a scrape on the bumper. According to witnesses, he attemped to do a 3-pt turn and hit the car 3 times.
I am so sorry to hear this. I would be pretty mad if someone hits my baby. I was upset at two aquantainces who slammed the door (multiple times) and spilt coffee in the cup holder and surrounding areas. Now, no one is allowed drinks other than bottled water in it.
Even when you're doing your best to protect the car, there's always somebody out there. OUr Prius ended up in the shop after I very carefully chose a parking slot between two patches of grass. Of course a maintenance employee with a big mowing machine made evil scratches down one side. He left a name and number but wouldn't respond to our calls. After contacting the insurance company, they did pay BUT it would have taken far less time and money if we hadn't given them the note. It seems a parked car in a private lot is protected and exempt from deductibles UNLESS someone leaves a message. We are supposed to try to track down the offender and collect the deductible from him.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Tideland Prius @ Sep 11 2006, 05:39 PM) </div> I didn't realize all three points were supposed to be on the same vehicle. All kidding aside, my condolences on that incident. I've only recently dared parking near other vehicles with my brand-spanking new Prius.
An update: What the first insurance company told me about the second was incorrect. But only because we have a licence plate, which apparently moves it from the 'hit and run' category to 'collision'. The damage will be covered, with a $300 deductible. If the perpetrator is caught, my deductible will be refunded and charged against their insurance. The same refund would be available from the first company, but subject to a $750 deductible. The damage is estimated at $600. Yay! Silver gets his boo-boo fixed. And then he gets a bath!
