From your neighbors to the north! I just have a couple questions, should I add OEM navigation and a backup camera or install a aftermarket (eg. Android double-din unit) to a base 2006? This car is my mother’s car, and she just wants to have a backup camera and possibly navigation, because she does not want to damage the rear bumper, and also does not want to get lost (she can use her iPhone but it is too small for her liking). She is looking in the $400 range. I am sorry if there is an old thread about something similar to this in the old PC articles.
Why not purchase a decent cradle for the phone, and use google maps? Real-time traffic advice, maps always up to date, what is not to like?? BTW Welcome to PriusChat!
Yeah, I use Google Maps/Waze when I’m in the car but when I’m not she would like something other than her phone for Navigation, plus her phone is too small/far away. Also we would like a backup/front camera so she does not damage the bumper.
Welcome! I don't have any experience with aftermarket back up cameras, but I've not yet found a GPS that's better than a Garmin with lifetime maps. They come with bigger displays now. Around town, the phone is OK, but I always take the Garmin on trips.
Yeah, a Garmin with lifetime maps. Assuming it's similar enough to 3rd gen interior: suction cup mount should work in the little driver's-side triangle window, and run the power cord around underside of steering wheel to 12 volt outlet? Back-up camera, meh: we have the OEM back up-up camera on third gen, and it is SO funhouse wide-angle, I do not trust what I'm seeing. You can be inches from an obstruction, and it looks to be a yard distant still.
I either do that or use the sand bag mount on the dash. True dat! I use mine for backing into the garage. I have a strip of white duct tape placed so it should stay under a certain pair of letters on my display and stop just as it disappears from view.
Yeah, I was just looking for something more stock. Also, has anyone dealt with aftermarket backup cameras?
A co-worker has one. He's satisfied. It's from Peak Auto, but I don't know which one he has. Auto Backup Camera | Wireless Reversing Camera | PEAK Auto
