After starting my Prius the engine was knocking and shaking. After running the engine for 30 - 45 seconds it operated normally. The car is always parked in our garage and the outside temperature was approx 32 degrees or a few colder. I have 30750 miles on the car. This is a much discussed, known problem. Toyota has two TSB's out on this for repair but most dealerships require either a DTC code to be set or be able to duplicate the issue before repair. Typically this happens when car started, driven a short distance, shut off before completion of warmup cycle and then cold-soaked overnight. There have been other reports that do not fit the above scenario, though. Search on here for engine knocking and you will find multiple threads.
Welcome aboard and join the knock club. Be sure to read the threads on the issue and be squeaky wheel at the dealer(s) to have the T-SBs implemented.
It has happened to me 3x when it was cold...... Took it to the dealer because I'm on vacation this week and they said they couldn't do anything because they were not able to recreate it and that no codes were tripped. Damn..... Even though there's a TSB on it. I'm very disappointed...... Oh well......it's still a good car.....not sure what else I can do.... Lucky for me that I live in So Cal so temperatures under 40 degrees is rare......
