    Airlines boosted fuel efficiency in 2007: Financial News - Yahoo! Finance

    "A trade group for the largest U.S. airlines said Tuesday that the carriers have improved the fuel efficiency of their planes and reduced harmful emissions.

    The Air Transport Association said U.S. airlines carried 20.4 percent more passengers and cargo while using 3 percent less fuel in 2007 than in 2000.

    That resulted in the release of 11.2 billion fewer pounds of carbon dioxide in 2007 than in 2000, according to the association..."

    I've read where airlines are loading way less fuel into aircraft---
    to improve economy---but also reducing safety factors?

    As long as they don't confuse standard and metric units when refueling (this happened once back in the 1980's).
