I want to change things up around here this year and make a sweet potato pie for Thanksgiving (next month in US, not 363-ish days from now in Canada, eh?). Anyone got a killer recipe they'd like to share? My traditional contribution has been what my family calls my cinnamon pie with apples, but I'd like to branch out some. I googled, but there are a bazillion recipes out there, and, while there's plenty of time for some experimentation, my increasingly difficult to find (or just plain increasing) waistline suggests that's a lousy idea. I netted a single recipe for sweet potatoes (without the pie element) from my friends on Facebook. I'm hoping for a better turnout here! TIA Chatters!
Sad response, isn't it? I like the idea of cinnamon pie with apples. My grandmother used to make a wonderful sweet potato dish with brown sugar and pecans. It wasn't a pie, though. I'd share sweet potato pie recipes if I had any, and I'd be happy to be a taste tester.
Funny you should mention your grandmother's sweet potatoes and pecans. I just found this this morning: Sweet Potato Pie with Pecan Topping Recipe | Simply Recipes I've been working my way through the Google hits given my lack of response here and on Facebook, and my younger sister says this is the one. I'll have to look into shipping tastes across the border. (And my cinnamon pie with apples is really just apple pie with LOTS of cinnamon--I think I might have found the upper limit for cinnamon last year, but the family denied it. I suspect they were just being polite, and hoping I'd ease back off the next time....)
When I was working at the homeless shelter we had at one time too many cans of canned sweet potato. There was a volunteer who always came on my supper shift every week and liked making desserts. I had read that you can substitute canned sweet potato for pumpkin in pie recipes, so I suggested that to her. She made pumpkin pie from a standard recipe in one of the recipe books at the house, but using the canned sweet potato, and it was a big success. Nobody could tell the difference. Maybe this doesn't help you, because your family will just think it's pumpkin pie, but you can use any pumpkin pie recipe and use sweet potatoes instead. I've never been a fan of pumpkin pie, so I don't have any recipes to offer you.
Thanks, Daniel, but I think I'm looking for something a bit more distinct(ive?). I appreciate the acknowledgment of my question in any case!
What waistline? I quit smoking and drinking, and they keep having sales on Ben & Jerry's ice cream...
Not that this adds anything to this thread, but I dislike Thanksgiving, it's the worst of all holidays, and that's because of the food. So I applaud you for trying something else than your usual. Give me enchiladas and oranges for Thanksday rather than all the junk people normally eat.
In my Jewish/Italian family, EVERYTHING is about food. Thanksgiving just gets more of us around a table to enjoy it together. Or fight about it. Or whatever. We put the 'fun' in 'dysfunctional.'
