Source title: Thick and deformed Antarctic sea ice mapped with autonomous underwater vehicles DOI: 10.1038/NGEO2299 First off, I think this was brilliant work. To use an autonomous submersible to observe the under side of ice foes, brilliant. I'm still reading the paper if nothing else to find out if their observations have found some new characteristic of Antarctic ice that has not been seen in Arctic ice. Also, the degree to which their metrics may be compared to CryoSat-2 and GRACE. Right now, these are tiny observations, "500,000 m**2". Regardless, it is an interesting paper and the authors were careful to state,". . . We suggest that thick ice in the near-coastal and interior pack may be under-represented in existing in situ assessments of Antarctic sea ice and hence, on average, Antarctic sea ice my be thicker than previously thought." Although they 'suggest', hopefully no one will take a flying-leap and claim more than what the authors stated. Bob Wilson
