New thread on this: Anyone have a mod to install corner lamps on a 2010 prius. I would also like to see where I am turning at night. Charlotte has quite a few bad corners that are built poorly and I would like to be able to see where I am going.
Any examples of what this looks like on other vehicles? Seems like you could create alot of trouble for other drivers in dark places that are unfamiliar with what those lights are?
I think they're common, maybe mostly on upscale vehicles? No clue how you would take on something like this with a Prius though, I wouldn't touch it.
Seriously? Why even answer other than to muck up the thread? Unless you are the Guru Prius mod dude, why chime in unless it is with helpful information. There are circular LED mods that only require a quarter size hold... that might work. I was hoping someone would list a viable, tried, and working solution.
I'm good at research... And I'd like to help you find best price for something that would work for you so I asked for examples of what you want it to look like but instead you ignore that request and complain about my playful reply to the other commenter? And have you seen how "mucked up" threads can get on here? One erroneous comment does not a mucked up thread make. Now let's get back to the conversation... Are there specific vehicles that have the type of lighting system for turns that you want? I'm familiar with headlights that turn with the steering wheel, but not familiar with front side lights that do similar work? But overall, it seems like an easy DIY if you wired up some relays to the turn indicators, or Toyota makes after market rear view mirror caps with turn indicators and running lights that can be configured in the way you want. By again, I'm not clear on what you're looking for yet, so it's hard to be of much use...
Yes, exactly... I can't follow the forums for the newest vehicles... The never ending array of how do I get a stain out of my upholstery or what kind of car mats should I buy. Yikes! That gets me so mad every time! But, ya know, different strokes for different folks... As a hardcore DIY person the more I can learn new stuff that's super challenging the more I appreciate this forum... But back to the OP question. What about using something like this with a relay that turns the light on when you use the turn indicator and turns it off when the turn indicator turns off? My moms Cadillac Eldorado and my old Chrysler sebring (I think) used to have corner lights that would illuminate where the car is going in a full turn... from where the headlights cut off. On the Cadillac, they were actually located on the left and right sides of the car. The problem is that in Charlotte, many of the curbs and turns are not well lit and they can lead you into an center extension that you cannot see on intersection left turns (never painted.) Or severly F'd up potholes... Or the center curb may extend past the stopping point, but it is not well lit and easy to hit. There are more examples, but I am sure you get the point. I was hoping for a simple solution. even if it is simply drilling a quarter size hold in the front bumper low on the side to illuminate on turn signals... flashing even... Just so I can see that dark area to the left (and right) of the headlights. ie. Crude, I know, would prefer something nicer. Maybe the fog light area would work? I have also posted a question about brighter turn signal bulbs. But that is another thread.
In that case seems like any kind of after market running lights or ground effects lighting that can be wired into an extra switch space on your dash or center console is the way to go.
As per you idea of patching into the blinker lights some LEDs, I suggest not doing that because there's a reason why they tint blinker lights... A bright white flashing light has been shown to distort a person's depth perception as well as being able to induce seizures... Both of which make cars heading toward your flashing white blinkers less safe. But it'd be really easy to tap into a wire in the wiring harness and put a couple switches in the dashboard near your turn indicator lever. Or foot switches could be fun? As far as what lights to use, now that I know this is a low budget oriented DIY project I'd suggest looking at all the cars you see as you drive around and find a vehicle that has some side running lights that you like the shape of and head to a junk yard and find a car like that and buy the fixtures. I remember when I first got my Prius I was going to take the "hybrid" badge off the front left and right fender and replace it with the really nice side running lights I've seen on a lot of VW cars. Never got around to it, but that idea might work for you?
Before any light mods, check your state DOT rules when it comes to modifying car exterior lighting. I live in CA and wanted to put 2 large strips of DRLs that had turn signal sequential pattern on front bumper, DOT said no. But if cars comes stock with corner light then obviously it's fine.
