Ovonics owns the patents on the NiMH batterys and the are apparently owned by Texaco and Texaco won't let them liscence anyone who want's to make large NiMH battery packs to use to power cars without using an ICE. If some one has a reference to this could you please post it.
AFAICR, from Who Killed The Electric Car?, GM bought the patent rights to produce large scale NiMH batteries while developing the EV1, then sold them to big oil when they crushed the EV1. I thought it was Chevron, but maybe they were traded. When I see the movie again, I'll try to remember. That strangle-hold has helped LiION get a big boost, despite some technical liabilities.
