What can possibly go wrong? "Next year, Volvo will offer customers the option to ditch the traditional key or even the modern electronic fob in favor of using a smartphone app to control their vehicle. The device's Bluetooth connection will allow the engine to start, let owners toggle the locks, and more. The Swedish automaker will show the innovative tech publicly at the Mobile World Congress 2016 in Barcelona, Spain, later in February." Volvo will let owners lose their keys forever in 2017
"Whoops, lost my phone!! Now I can't call anyone for help OR even get into my car OR drive anywhere" Sounds great
My car keys are the last keys I have. My house has a Korean imported Samsung door lock. It's an RFID enabled lock with a code backup. To get into my office, its also an RFID key. All the other properties use gate codes and such. Yay for the key going away. I just hope I can pair my secure NFC device to the car and not have to use bluetooth. Bluetooth is extremely insecure.
My cell phone is currently my: Garage door opener and OCD sympathizer (opens and closes with app and emails me if I forget to close it) ATM (electronic check deposit) Security monitor for home DVR Coupon book Taxi cab (uber) Music player Computer Airline ticket Tour guide Bible Maps Level Camera Camcorder Video phone Calculator Email Alarm clock And recently: Wallet (Apple Pay) RSA token (security for company vpn login) Library (ebooks) Soon it will be my: Thermostat House keys Drivers license And probably left a few things out. Am I ready for it to be my cars keys? You betcha.

The Bolt will let a phone be a key for the door. GM may have stopped there before letting it start the car though.
What a great idea! I'm not being sarcastic. The interest rates I pay are incrementally higher because of deadbeats that don't make their payments. This device puts more of the cost on the non payers.
Meanwhile, the government is forcing Apple to purposely hack their phones and half the country thinks that's acceptable.
If it has a code and/or keylet backup? Sure. Why not? It wouldn't be as lame as a separate key fob that you have to carry around with you all the time IN ADDITION to your cell phone! It would also solve the distance problem, since I presume that the car would have an IMEI, and calling it (like from anywhere....) would also eliminate the need for a stand alone remote start, climate control, theft recovery, etc.... And you wouldn't have to pay %^#$@#$ crooks hundreds of dollars for a lost fob....or to reseed a car with two lost fobs....or to share access to your car..... Gee......ain't technology grand? Everybody is oooooing and ahhhhhhing over something that should already have been standard by now. Or....is it just a lame app that Volvo is going to charge you extra for???
