I bought carpet and loaded it into the PIP, needing to strap down the hatchback with the carpet sticking out. As soon as I drove off both turn signals started flashing and a tone beeping. The flashers stopped after a minute, but the beeping sounded all the way home. Very Annoying. Good thing I wasn't going cross-country !!!
i'll have to try that, that's new compared to my gen II's anyway. btw, can you resort the spreadsheet by date? someone messed it up. thanks!
VERY good thing as having the hatch open lets in exhaust fumes and Carbon Monoxide could have killed you. Carbon monoxide - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It's a Toyota thing. My 2012 PIP and a friend's Toyota SUV both do it when hauling kayaks with hatch tied. No way to shut off, AFAIK.
You wouldn't have made it across the country, and the beeping and flashing aren't nearly as annoying as a ride in an ambulance (or worse!)
^ That's one issue oft cited. Honda was more laissez faire: just cautioned if you're driving with hatch open to keep cabin windows down too, something like that. You probably suck in more CO just driving behind some joker's "collector" car.
The latch (the part down in the trunk rim) has a sensor so it knows if it is in the "Open" or the "Closed" position. When you swing the hatch down it pushes a metal rod in there and closes. You can use a screwdriver or a nail or something to press it down into the "closed" position even though the hatch is open. Remember to use the rubber open button on the lid to open the latch when you are done hauling. Otherwise when you close the lid it just slams against the (still in the closed position) latch and bounces open again.
