My catalytic converter was stolen from my 2011 Prius. The Toyota dealership has ordered a replacement catalytic converter (including O2 sensor and installation hardware) for a price of $2700. I got a call from the dealership saying the catalytic converter was in. The dealership is about a 45 minute drive from my house. I have not taken the car in to get it evaluated by the dealership given the distance, but they want to evaluate it before they will give me a quote and tell me what it will take to fix it.

I’m having second thoughts about having a dealership do the repair. I’ve looked under the car and noticed the thief, cut the exhaust pipe very close to the heat exchanger. So there will be some welding required to install the new catalytic converter. I don’t know if the dealership is the best place to go to have exhaust work done that requires welding.

As an alternative, I have called a local muffler shop and was given a quote of $5000 to do the repair and they have very good ratings online.

Does anyone have experience with the dealership doing a catalytic converter installation? Am I better off going with a local muffler shop versus the dealership?

Note: I’m in a state that requires an OEM catalytic converter replacement, or a CARB compliant catalytic converter.

Isn't the catalytic converter for this car only like $1,800? So that's two grand and they're charging you three to install it thousand? No kidding I wouldn't be paying it.

I didn't think that they were $2,700 or the converter and 1. 02 sensor is $2,700. Where I live that install would be $300 right here in Central North Carolina they'd go ahead and screw in the O2 sensor probably for nothing because the bung is sitting right there while the pipe is laying on the ground. I don't know if there's any rewiring but there's always that.

Cat install at a muffler shop a job muffler shop will be very quick 45 minutes to an hour tops even with the welding this will take no time you'll barely have time to get out of the car and stand up underneath there with the guy at least that's how it goes at my place ridiculously quick won't even get a cup of coffee poured good I've had this done on three cars. And when I'm having this done I'm having the exhaust modified also.

Dealership don't weld, they replace entire components. So they will detach at the exhaust manifold and replace everything down to the next bolt-on position. They will also repair and replace the O2 sensor and connectors with OEM. No chance you'll fail state smog inspections.

The muffler shop route; you need to get it in writing that - If you fail state smog inspection; they will make it right... If you take it to a muffler shop - I would get the car to a state authorized smog station for inspection, so you don't wait a few years to find out your no longer legal and need to get it done again.

    Hope this helps....

Yeah but if something happens at the dealer and they can't get it right that isn't necessarily going to make you solvent You're out of your car there are some '04s and '05s and '08s here in North Carolina that nobody can get the check engine light off of not even the dealer unless they put an $8,000 worth of parts just something like that which is worth double with the vehicles worth at this particular year or what have you. This is the problem for buying an $8,000 '09 the day you drive it home or go to pick it up the light will come on the next morning you go out to start the car now you have an $8,000 paperweight that needs $5,000 in parts this can happen with one of these electric hybrid type of things It is not seriously uncommon. And if you were to spend a bunch of money with the dealer and the dealer got stuck and couldn't get the light off they're not giving you anything back You may not pay them and leave your car there but you've already paid for the parts to be ordered or what have you and you'll be out that stuff or something they're a big business they're not succumbing to you let me tell you that especially in places big markets they can tie you up and nonsense for way longer than you think. And when you have no money and no car there's always that.

Best place for a CAT install in your case?
    A State that BORDERS Colorado....
There are SEVEN of them - three in one place....Utah, Arizona, New Mexico (the other three of the “Four Corners” states.)
Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Wyoming also border Colorado.

It would SEEM that you can drive to Nevada, get a hotel room and a decent meal, blow a thousand at a casino AND get your cat replaced for the price of just getting your cat replaced in Colorado.
They may 'require' that you get an OEM cat but do they look at the cat when they test your car?

Frankly I think it's time for a little civil disobedience.

    JMHO.

What's the mileage on your car?
Did they cut a coolant line when they sawed off your cat?
Is it drivable? If not then spend the thousand you were going to blow at the casino for a rental car and a tow dolly for a week.

    IMPORTANT!

Are you familiar with the Prius Death Rattle?
As our President would say - NOT a JOKE.
Read the 10 longest posts on 'head gasket' and 'EGR' if your car has more than 120,000 miles on it.....or just leave it where it was catnapped with the key fob on the seat with a $20 bill and hope somebody steals the rest of the car.
