I saw this on another forum... a bird getting caught and eaten by a spider... Mammoth backyard spider devours bird Bird gets caught in the web, struggles till it is too tired to move anymore and the spider moves in for it's meal... I have seen bugs bigger than this... just not as dramatic a picture.
Well... most of the rest of the bugs... are small... to me anyways... But that don't mean they ain't scary. You think there are some other bugs to include... please do.
I'm going to bookmark this thread and look at it on those 20-below winter days. The cold weather kills off those big scary bugs...
I went through a major bug obsession as a child. When I was 8 I wanted to be an entomologist. I don't think I'd particularly like to handle these big guys, but they still fascinate me. I have 2 daughters and they think I'm nuts. I had no idea that a spider could handle a bird or a bat, though. (except for Shelob or whatever the hell her name is.)
That spider taking down the bird is pretty incredible. As a kid, searching for spiders was one of my favorite activities. I grew up in Colorado, and we would usually getting some really large (relatively, not by the photos in this thread) black widows in the garage each year. My wife and I just moved and in our new building, the basement has more wolf spiders than I think I've seen anywhere. Each glass block window has one in each corner. And a stray one already traveled upstairs with me last month -- must have been on my head, but I noticed it when it crawled on my arm.
I love those funnel shaped webs. I used to spend hours watching those waiting for the spider to come out.
