I purchased my Prius in 2005 and I love it. One problem that I encounter time and time again is bird attacks. Ever since day one birds dive bomb the front of my car and all I see is feathers come out the back. Today I had my window open, which I never do and a big bird flew into the drivers side mirror and broke it off then bounced off my arm. I'm glad my window was open because the impact may have broken the window. Has anyone had or heard of this? It's never happened to me in any other type of car.
Birds do tend to ignore the Prius when they are on the road eating stuff but they usually just fly out of the way in the last second. Do you have any pictures of the damage? I find it hard to believe that a bird can break off the mirrors. Unless its a big bird with 3 foot or more wing span and you was traveling 65+ MPH and the bird was traveling at max speed in the opposite direction. Even then the mirror should just bend back toward the car like they normally do.
I had cruise control set at 52, I was in a 50 mph and glad I did because there was a cop ahead. It truly did snap the mirror off. I just glued it back on but I don't think it will stay. I swear I am NOT making this up. It's just crazy.
Just the mirror or the whole housing? If you want to get a cheap replacement part you can go to Toyota Parts Cheap - Genuine OEM
This forum is for questions about the PriusChat web site. Tom Edit: Mods, thanks for moving the thread.
Sorry for posting in the wrong place. I never posted here before. The whole housing snapped off. Thanks for the website for replacement parts.
I've never experienced anything like this. And I don't remember anyone ever posting anything like this. Someone once posted that birds frequently pooped on their Prius. But flying into it is a new one. Maybe they are Islamic birds.
Heck with attacking the car, wait till the go after you directly. I once had an out of control duck come straight out of the sky and force me into the ground after which he hit the side of the house behind me. My Dad had a pheasant perform a kamakazi attack on his large plate glass huge window. Destroyed the window and the pheasant. As far as I can tell, this happens when they sense an attack from a eagle or hawk and slam to the ground to avoid certain death. Look to see if the area this is happening has a big bird patrolling overhead or a big nest nearby.
What color is your Prius? I've read a couple of posts from people with magnetic grey Prii, leading to a suspicion that the car blends in with the pavement a bit.
 Hitchcock must be rolling in his grave ... As I boy I was chased by a gander. Geese are *very* mean and cranky birds
The term "being goosed" had to come from somewhere. In this area we have swans. They are just as mean as geese, but a LOT bigger. Tom
A kangaroo once took a chip out of my door handle, I hit two magpies in one day in my Prius, right after dodging a pidgeon, I never did that in any other car, and never hit a roo even if this was a minor encounter, in any other car. I did hit a cow (more damage to car than cow) in my work car and a cat and a rabbit in my Camry, bent the car too. There could be something in this.
You're lucky. Middle of the night, responding to a call, going about 70 mph. Lucky to be alive after the impact. Apparently cow parts are scattered throughout the interior
!! Was it by any chance a frozen chicken? I've had a couple of bird strikes on my wing mirrors - myna and magpie - nothing even approaching those consequences though...
I can often sneak up on squirrels, but they're still hard to hit. The left wing mirror was taken out by a stray log remnant, courtesy of a passing logging truck, though it could easily have been the windshield if I hadn't seen it coming. As for the birds, they seem to be getting more accurate on their bombing runs.
