I have been trying to learn more about the CAN bus protocol, the modules on our Prius vehicles and comms. I was interested in learning what part of this network is on all the time and would drain the 12 Volt battery. In my search, I found an interesting white paper on the subject from IOActive. They are a research group that publishes on communications, security and other areas besides automotive. This article discusses Ford and Prius comms. These are the two halves of a Prius CAN bus block diagram from the article. The paper was written in 2014 but the vehicles are a 2010 Prius and a 2010 Escape. This is Part 1 Part 2 The arrows in the middle left of this diagram connect to the two arrows at the top left of block 1. Below is the link to the full article if you are interested in the nuts and bolts of comms. https://ioactive.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IOActive_Adventures_in_Automotive_Networks_and_Control_Units.pdf This is a pretty good paper and quite a network for a vehicle.
The diagrams are from Toyota’s New Car Features book (more info), where they appear under Power Source/Network: Networking: CAN Communication System: System Diagram.
