My 2011 Prius just blew the head gasket at a couple hundred miles shy of 270k. Up until this point, it's been the most-reliable, cheapest-to-maintain car I've owned (have owned Acura, Honda, Subaru (220k+), Volvo (220k)). I now face a dilemma -- replace the engine for $5k or look for another vehicle. The car has no rust (a miracle for midwest winters), the leather seats aren't ripped, and it's generally in good shape. The only costly repair, other than routine maintenance, was replacing the AC compressor a few years ago. I've replaced the brakes only one time and it even has its original 12V battery (tested 100% 18 months ago after it drained). Gas mileage hasn't shown signs of diminishing. It's been a great car and I hate to give up on it so soon (LOL!), but is it time I throw in the towel on it? With the tariffs and the cost of cars to rise, finding something down the road if the Prius has other big issues might be difficult. I have found a used car I like but am weighing my options. The low cost to maintain and operate are definitely reasons to stay with the Prius, not to mention the MPGs!
Forget that it is a Prius. If it were a Ford or Chevy that blew a head gasket, what would you do? I would replace the engine and expect another 200k out of it.
it's a tough call. the biggest risks are the battery and brake actuator. both have risen in price lately.
