Does that mean you'll be getting more diesel version in the US or does this article relate to the Euro market?
I don't know but I tend to think the U.S. options will remain limited. BMW NA has not announced a diesel with the start of sales of the F30 3 Series - hopefully they will see the light and bring one in soon.
I love how the highway number is quoted for the diesel but the combined for the hybrid. Anyone doing a quick read will notice the difference is huge unless they realise the slight difference. The 320d EDE looks enticing. I mean, it's only slightly over 10 years ago we had a sub 200-hp 3 series lol.
Not sure I completely understand your points, but the fuel consumption quoted in the article for the 320d EDE (4.1 l/100 km) is the combined rating. The highway (extra urban) rating is 3.6 l/100 km (http://carfueldata.direct.gov.uk/search-new-or-used-cars.aspx?vid=24941 - ~65 mpg U.S.?).
The figures are probably correct. The new BMW and Audi range of diesels over here are very efficient and almost meet those of the Prius. OK, these are based on the manual transmissions and they're not as good as the Prius mpg's BUT they're not bad either. The 320d is a real good balance of performance and economy. Unlikely we'll get them, the cost of certifying the engine would probably require them to put it into multiple models for it to be worth it. Outside of 3-series buyers, I don't think many Americans will want a 4-cylinder diesel BMW. Personally I'd love a 320d wagon or x3 2.0d.
But there are 1 series buyers and X3 and X1 buyers (when the X1 gets to the States) who also might want one, no?
