So after driving a few blocks i hear a tick-tick-tick sound. pull over and take a look and it's a bolt in the tread of the tire. naturally, on saturday of a holiday weekend. prius is grounded until tuesday unless i find a tire shop open tomorrow.

my question is, does the tire pressure monitor need any special treatment if i have to replace the tire? i haven't dealt with this before since i've never had to have a tire fixed on a vehicle with the tpms. the tire may be repairable, but i can't see for sure how wide the bolt is because it's pushed all the way in and i can only see the bolt head. car is three weeks old; not a happy camper here.

Tell the repair shop that you have TPMS. They should know, but it doesn't hurt to mention it. TPMS doesn't take any special handling, except to make sure and not break the sensor.

Make sure the shop has experience dealing with alloy wheels too. The can be damaged fairly easily (bead).

TPMS is standard (by law) on every new car, and has been for some time, so any tire shop should have experience with it.

If they determine the tire is repairable, be sure to have it repaired with a patch/plug (applied to the interior of the tire), and not just a plug (inserted from the outside).

I'd check the tire pressure (vs. the B-pillar sticker values) after the tires cool down, since my experience is they don't always get it right. And then reset your TPMS system (instructions in owners manual).

So they would repair an unrepairable tire?

No they wouldn't. Nobody said they would repair an unrepairable tire.

You probably pick up a screw and not a bolt
Bolts have flat end, screws have pointed ends :D

Many, many years ago I "picked up" a freakin' tire iron.

When I took the wheel off I used the socket end as a convenient carrying handle...:D

I thought you use the tire iron to hit the next person who ask you where the plug is:p

I have to think you could have repaired, replaced, improved or done anything you could imagine to that tire with half the effort you have spent posting and taking pictures.

hey joe, keep the hate out of my thread ok? if you don't like the thread, then simply go elsewhere. not sure why that's an issue for you. just so you know, my tire shop closed at noon on Saturday, and was closed sunday and monday, so i've had a little time to post. if this would have happened friday, i would have had it fixed by now. this is small town indiana here, and we're somewhat limited on services during holidays, so you thought wrong. i didn't really think it was safe to drive to a bigger town, nor did i have the time due to job responsibilities out of town.

but if you would have actually read the original post, my question was about tpms sensors since i've not had to have a tire repair on a car with that system.

tire is fixed! it was a screw, about a half inch or so. it looked like the kind of screw that comes with the build-it-yourself furniture. easy patch job, should be good now.
