so long story short, i had a whack-a-mole game in my 2004 prius hatchback. i went over a speed bump (and really slowly) and my window shattered. has anyone had to replace the window (the big one in the back)? how much did it cost? do people suggest I go through the dealer or someone else for repair? thanks in advance....

Whether you have them install the replacement window depends on who is going to pay for the replacement of the window. If you can convince Toyota that the window failed as a result of a manufacturing defect (as in the way the window was installed at the factory), the dealer will be the one who does the install. If Toyota laughs at the prospect of replacing the window, then you are left with possibly your insurance company (Act-of-God? covered by Comprehensive coverage???) or you directly. Personally, unless there is more to the story than you are wanting to admit to, I would try the insurance company right after the dealer with a warranty claim.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(apriusfan @ May 23 2007, 12:55 AM) </div> do you think there's a chance that it would be covered under the extended warrenty? i didn't even really consider that. the situation was basically that i had a large heavy object in the back with the door closed down. i went over a speed bump at an appropriate speed and it shattered.... the game wasn't even touching the window, i guess it was just the pressure on the door.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(profe55or @ May 22 2007, 11:11 PM) </div> I honestly don't know. Check the wording of the extended warranty contract. Ask the dealer if something like the glass shattering would be covered. Also check with your auto insurance agent regarding whether the insurance policy Comprehensive section would cover the loss.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(apriusfan @ May 23 2007, 03:03 AM) </div> Ok, thanks for the advice. I appreciate it
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(profe55or @ May 23 2007, 03:23 AM) </div> Just posting results for future reference for anyone else looking this up.... window cost is about $500, not including installation. Extended warrenty doesn't cover it. My insurance is fixing it.
Howdy Profe55or My car insurance has comprehensive coverage which includes glass breakage for any reason. There's a deductable. Is there a chance your car insurance covers glass, too?

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(profe55or @ May 22 2007, 09:49 PM) </div> I have a friend whose rear window shattered on its own in cold weather. The dealer recognized it as a flawed window and replaced it without cost. The car was about a year and a half old at the time. Unless the window had previously been hit by a rock or something, I don't see how a speed bump could make it break. Check with the dealer. Dave M.
