Is this a good idea? Was looking at one for 12k, cheapest in my area, with 112k miles. I do live in a CARB state (California) if that matters. I'm already dead set on getting a Prius but wanted to see if it's more adviseable to get one with less miles. Thanks!
How many miles do you put on a car annually? I'm not sure you want the "cheapest" car in your area. You have to find "why" it's the cheapest.
I actually wasn't planning to put that many miles on it - around 6,000 a year. Provided it checks out with a trusted mechanic, is there anything else I need to look for/look forward to on higher-mileage Prii?
If you're going to put only 6000 miles a year on the car, I guess it wouldn't be so bad to get one with 112k miles on it. It would take you 6 years to reach 150k miles, the end of the CARB hybrid warranty. These car are known to be quite reliable. Check the service records, if available, to make sure the maintenance was done properly and on a timely matter. These engines seem to burn a little oil a high mileage, so you have to keep an eye on the oil levels until you can determine the usage. Top off as needed, don't let it get low. Other than that, have it checked at a dealership (preferred) and hope for the best. Services that should have been done or due by 120k engine and inverter coolant change Spark plugs bleed brake fluid Transaxle fluid change regular oil and air filter changes.
If it's at a dealership, see the CarFax... if anything, just to see if any damage was reported. I tend to stay away from cars that have been repaired after a crash. Drive it. Make sure it tracks straight. Make sure there are no loud clunking noises from the suspension if you go over a bump. Look underneath and around wheel wells for signs of excessive rust/damage. Look under the hood. A well maintained Prius will have a fairly clean Air Filter and clean looking oil, so pull that dip stick and have a paper towel to wipe it with. If it's not at a Toyota dealer, take it to one and ask what it would cost to do an inspection, unless you know a good Prius/hybrid mechanic. If it looks good overall, it may have been maintained well, but don't take that for granted. If the miles on this car were mostly highway miles, it will be fine. Prius/Prii are reliable and durable cars. Do your homework on this car.
Thanks all. After some thought, I may just take the plunge, haggle a little bit and go for it. No accidents on the CarFax, and pretty good service record between its two previous owners, FWIW.
I'm not sure Prius is the best car for your needs. Be advised that batteries also fail from old age and not only miles. Hybrids are cost effective for people who drive a lot.
plenty of pri running fine with that kine of miles and you have 6 years left of warranty at 6k a year. all the best!
