I'm looking at buying a 2005 or 2006 used Prius with between 40,000 and 70,000 miles. Considering the reliability of the car, is it worth the extra $1,000 or so to buy an extended warranty?

Also, is it possible to get map upgrades to the in-dash navigation system, or is it a closed system? Thanks for any advice.

Extended warranties never make sense for any product. Statistically you will pay more for the warranty than the company will pay out. Put the $1000 dollars in the bank as an emergency fund. It will be available for any emergency; personal, medical, automotive, house, etc.

The hybrid components will still be under factory warranty for 7 years / 100,000 miles.

I don't know about the navigation. I bought a $200 garmin that I use in all my vehicles.

you can't buy the extended warranty on a used car with over 40,000 miles

toyota wants 250-300.00 for a navigation dvd...

he's in california, he gets 150,000 or 10 years on his hybrid components.
