Solar PV installed on roof of Bradford Cathedral; Solar panels go on Bradford Cathedral roof (From Bradford Telegraph and Argus) [ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bradford_Cathedral]Bradford Cathedral - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame] Personally I think traditional Churches and Cathedrals would be ideal for solar PV due to their (rough) East West allignment. In the UK they would also be able to claim significant subsidies guaranteed for 25 years. These would pay the installation costs in full after about 8-10 years. Everyone's a winner
Very low religious attendance. Much higher number of people who believe in a god, but relatively high atheism/agnosticism. Can't be bothered to get the last numbers, but I saw a YouGov poll which was pretty clear in the trend towards agnosticism or atheism.
Every bare roof is a waste. However, with declining attendance it's a significant risk to put panels on all but the more important churches since you have little guarantee the building will continue to be operated.
What ever the views on Church going, the buildings themselves (150 yr old+) are protected and cannot be knocked down. As such, even if an alterntative use is found, chances are the panels will be of use. Also, the panels are probably only likely to be installed on Churches that are 'popular' as the initial cost of installation would be out of the budget of a declining Church.
