Hello, I want to try something here that I've not done before, namely to attach a sound file recording of a particular noise I'm hearing from my newly acquired 2007 Prius. I hear it when the car is in park, vent fan off, and motor dormant. When I step on the brake, there's this sound which I'm having difficulty describing. I recorded it and amplified the recording with mpg software so that it sound on my pc pretty much as it sound to my ear in the vehicle. Is this do-able in PriusChat? Mel
The only files you can upload directly to the forum are images. For audio or video the simplest way is probably to put it on YouTube, then you can embed it here using the Video icon in the reply box.
Thanks for the information. I guess I'll include a picture of my Prius with the sound. And learn how to upload to YouTube. It'll be a first for me. Mel
Hey Mel! The noises you are hearing could possibly be normal hybrid sound effects. At idle, motor dormant, you should be hearing your inverter pump and it should sound like an aquarium air pump humming. Normal. The brakes are not your normal braking system and a pump also plays an important role in making them function. The pump occasionally runs and tests itself, or when you are pressing the brake pedal, you may hear it buzz, click, or "bark". Normal. When you turn off prius and restart, you will also hear the coolant storage tank pump run for about 10 seconds, and it may get noisier in cold weather (my old '07 would). Normal. Can you describe the noise(s) you are hearing?
Hey PG32! thanks for your willingness to assist! Having owned a 2006 and 2010, I'm secure in saying that these are not the usual shutdown noises. As a matter of fact, it doesn't occur after I've turned the car off. I hear it when all interior ventilation is turned off and the car would normally be totally silent. At this point if I apply the brakes I hear sound like tappets going bad (in old cars). I have an mp3 file I could attach to an email very easily. I'd be glad to send it to an email box of your choice. It's hard to describe this noise but I can make it happen whenever I choose to. I just don't know what it is and that's bothering me. I'm wondering if it may be the brake pump going bad and if having someone else hold the brake pedal down while I go under the hood looking for the unit would serve me. Mel
To respond to your question a different way, "can you describe the noise . . .?" I've decided that it sound somewhat like the high speed tapping I've heard in non hybrid cars when the engine is old and the tappets are sounding. The noise is by no means as loud and the engine isn't running. The car is on and I get the sound when I press down on the brake. When I let up on the brake the sound stops and starts again when I press down.
