So I was trying to shut off the reverse and seatbelt beeps and hallway through punching the codes in I exited back to the home screen (wasn't sure I was entering everything correctly) then went into edit again and got it all done. Today I noticed my cons was about 8mpg lower than what I can normally get - now mind you it was 111 degrees today so the AC was blasting and I had two passengers in the car as well. Bottom line can you damage the cars ECU if you incorrectly punch in a code with the scanguag?
No. The AC and extra weight it to blame I suspect. Heavy loads like max AC can easily drop instant mpg by 10mpg.
But yes, you -could- change something you shouldn't. But "damage", no. I suspect it was as explained above in this case, so as they say down under, no worries. Just a warning to those who want to mess around with the car. Be sure you know what you're doing (good idea to have it all printed out and follow step by step). Bottom line, if you do manage to mess it up I suspect a dealer can always fix it by returning it to "factory defaults".
I think the one thing you can mess with through devices like you are talking about it the battery fan speed. And obviously if you let the battery get too hot you can damage it.
"Today I noticed my cons was about 8mpg lower than what I can normally get - now mind you it was 111 degrees..." ...ooh, & me without my muff. Higher temp on the CC & lower fan speed will help the FE but may increase cabin noise.
