Good info in this recent 3 minute MotorWeek video. Does anyone know if our Prius Primes need the cameras realigned in a windshield replacement or just possible wasted money as mentioned in this video?
Yap, PRIME and I assume all PRIUS with a forward-facing camera needs re-calibration if the windshield is replaced. Some glass shops can do it, some can not. I have seen the shop manual posted somewhere on a different thread. It is not a difficult task if you had a place to do it yourself. When I had my windshield replaced, my dealer did it for $150.
Thanks. Was the forward facing camera recalibrated after the new windshield was in place? i.e. Could one have the windshield replacement and then test by driving to determine recalibration requirements.
In theory, you could. But the recalibration procedure itself tests the alignment of the camera much like the way you adjust the headlight beam. I don't think the misaligned camera throws an error code, so you might have a hard time testing it on a road unless you have some very straight flat road with a line and strategically placed objects (or cars). I guess if you have a window replacement without recalibration, you could just drive and test all the features that use the forward-facing camera, like PCS, DRCC, line departure warning, auto headlight, and if they are not functioning correctly, then you could ask for recalibration. But for a safety reason, I wouldn't recommend doing that just to save a few hundred bucks.
Step one of alignment after replacement of front suspension components: NOTICE: If the wheel alignment has been adjusted, and if suspension or underbody components have been removed/installed or replaced, be sure to perform the following initialization procedure in order for the system to function normally: Perform zero point calibration of the yaw rate and acceleration sensor.
