Can the oil change indicator light's interval be changed? I'm wondering if it can be changed from 5k miles to say, 4k or 3k before the "Maint Reqd" light comes on.

No. The function is embedded by the manufacturer in the software. Without opening the equipment and working with the chips at the level of information exchange, this will not work.

What equipment does your car have? Is there a navigation device and a calendar function on the MFD? In this case, I would make an arbitrary note that at a mileage of 3 thousand miles, for example, tire replacement.

Is there a navigation device and a calendar function on the MFD?

Don't most people drive the same amount pretty much every day all year except for two weeks of vacation? My oil changes are down to 6 weeks or whatever it is. And then I just dump it screw a new 3600 filter on and fill her up. So what if I'm a day or two or a few hours earlier or something doesn't even matter it's done That's how it went for about 36 years of the 46 we're talking about every six or eight weeks drain plug was out and this was happening.. now with me semi-retired and driving approximately half the amount I used to now it's about 12 to 16 weeks still in oil change oh well.

I've never seen a Toyota with the ability to change the 5,000 mile setting, which is pretty dumb on Toyota's part.

If you change your own oil, just buy a roll of window stickers and then you can do a quick look to see where you're at on mileage. (I do this in our vehicles but found the ink from a pen fads in the sun so, now, I print little labels to put in there.)

OR use one of your Trips mileage (A or B) and reset it to zero when the oil is changed and it will show how many miles you've driven.

Is the built-in maintenance reminder system functional when the calendar date cannot sync correctly? My 2007 Prius's MFD reverted to 2005 calendar year and cannot be set to the correct date.

I don't use Fuelly to track mpg but many members here do. Looks like you could use Fuelly to set reminders.

The calendar date cannot be greater than 12/31/2024

The period from January 1, 2005 through
December 31, 2024 can be set for searching.

page 120 of the Navi manual
    https://carmanuals2.com/d/10100/toyota-prius-2008-2008-prius-navigation-other-functions

It has to do with the "week number". ChapmanF | PriusChat explained it well.

You can use the mileage. It does not depend on the navigation system.

I just use trip-A as tank mileage calculator and trip-B as the maintenance counter. You can also look at the 1000 digit of your odemeter and do a change every division of 3,6,9,1,4,ect. That'll take a bit more brain power, but doing 5K changes - your only looking for 5 or 0 in that position.

    YMMV

What happens if you just ignore it? Does it obscure part of the dash display, disrupt anything? Canadian spec Toyota's don't have this, we muddle through.

Option for Gen2. Are you talking about Gen3?

First a yellow sign appears. MAINT REQD.

You can ignore this reminder for a week, a month...
If you ignore it for a very long time, a very very long time, an eternity and do not change the oil, then a couple more yellow icons will appear below and possibly a red triangle.

Gen 3 is my case. I think Gen 2 is similar, for US spec, but not for Canadian:

    upload_2025-3-18_10-37-11.png

^ Page 365 in 2009 Owner's Manual (last year of gen 2). Again, looks to be only a US "feature".

So just the "MAINT REQD" icon, nothing more? You could just ignore the icon, but not neglect oil changes (and various other services), follow the miles/months spec, or whatever you choose..

Yes. It's just a reminder icon.

If you change the oil periodically and don't reset the burning inscription, nothing will happen. The icon with the yellow inscription is not directly related to the oil.

And this sign is really only used in the USA. I don't know why.

It probably has to do with liability as the result of a losing court case or that people just like blaming someone else for their stupidity rather than taking responsibility for their actions. It seems to be more prevalent in the US due to, I presume, the litigious culture there.

    Possibly.
Apparently it gets to the point that microwave oven manufacturers are forced to write in the instructions not to dry your hair after washing it in the microwave.

Mine's an 05 with no nav or backup camera so not fancy. It does have smartkey.

My car burns about 15% of the space between the high and low "full" zone on the oil dipstick in 5k miles. I know that's healthy for a 200K mile car but wanted to change to a shorter (but normal) interval for when I sold the car. I'm a motor head and can keep up with things on the car but most people aren't so I wanted to give them even more margin.

Then I'd be doing 5K changes using middle of the road oil at this point for the rest of the car's life That's perfect be coming up on five dump it and put a new filter I use a 3600 filter from my van on all my Prius 1NZ and the middle of the road super tech oil never a problem run it to 600k they'll be long out of it before then no matter who buys it
