    We'd chew through our coal pretty damn fast going down that road. The price of coal would jump because of the huge increase in demand. Furthermore, you need a lot of hydrogen for CTL. Currently, that hydrogen comes from natural gas. A large CTL effort would put a lot of upward pressure on coal and NG. There would also need to be more power plants required for the energy investment of CTL. The EROI is a lot worse than pumping oil out of the ground, espcially the light, sweet crude that refineries like to process.
