I recently saw the new 2015 Chrysler 200 at a car show and was surprised to see a center console similar to the current Prius design. But checkout how well they solved the awkward cupholder/armrest positioning.

Looks to me like one of the holders is covered by the armrest, the 2 holders look too close together for our cups and both look difficult for cups with handles like ours. Might have to run up to see though.

Edit: I just saw another photo that shows the holder is clear of the armrest, but barely. I could be wrong, but the setup would not work for me unless I changed the types of cups we use and I'd have to see how tall they could be. The Prius design works okay for me, but I can see how it doesn't for others.

I believe that the twist type shifter is the future, instead of the joystick on the Gen III.

it's a bit better because it's lower, but still takes up too much valuable real estate.

That's how it's done on the Toyota Venza too. The armrest slides fore/aft (in the forward position, it'll cover one cupholder) and the cupholders slide back to reveal a deep console box.

Also note that the 2012+ Prius design is different from the 2010/2011 design. The 2nd cupholder is exposed in the 2012+ but hidden in the console on the 2010/2011.
