British comedians Mitchell and Webb had a sketch set in the early 1960's after JFK's speeches. NASA was trying to decide whether they should spend the money to land on the moon or fake it. After the complexities, logistics, engineering, media and politics were analysed it was down to the accountants, who concluded that the only difference between landing and faking the landing was the cost of catering.
