I am thinking about getting a dash cam and was wondering how others have installed/wired them up? Any tips to conceal the cable? I assume they will need to be plugged into the cigaret lighter I the arm rest, are there any better better power sources available? Any photos of your install would also be appreciated. iPad ?
Get it wired in professionally. When I used my car as a taxi I had my TomTom hard wired into the car (fused of course) . It didn't cost that much to have done; couple hours labour cost and I had my meter and two way radio installed at the same time. The cables run from the battery where it was fused, along the edge of the carpet (hidden of course) and then up the inside edge of the drivers door and the mini usb cable lies loose for about 6 inches near the small quarterlight window (I have a gen3). This way I don't have nasty cables hanging all over the place. Before my mileage reduced I was tempted to install a dashcam and might do yet.
*kicking this old thread. I'm looking for a solution to connect a battery saver on a 12V wire. My goal is to let the camera still detect motion when the car is parked/turned off and avoid a flat battery (battery saver turns off the power to the camera when voltage is below xVolt). Is there a wire near the passenger door that I can use?
I don't believe so. When I had all my taxi equipment installed the guy said he had to lay a couple wires directly from the 12v battery as there were no suitable 'always live' wires at the dash.
I use a Dod LS 330 recorder. It sits up on top of the windshield just right of the rear view mirror, out of my sight while I'm driving yet still takes a well centered video. I've got a three in one 12v receptacle and the line from the recorder is quite long so you can hide it nicely up and around the windshield and dash. I highly recommend the Dod line. Picked mine up for about $150 and have had no problems with it for over a half a year...
Strange to watch that video. Canada looks much more familiar to a European than the US does. Even the layout of the garage forecourt. Oh and even your parking bays looks around the same size as ours.
Check out my post from a while back about constant power source. JustDidIt - Modding My 2007....The 2008 Touring died. | Page 8 | PriusChat Used the GA-NHWC3 found on Amazon for $15 but eBay for $12 with free shipping.
