I tend to read anything about China, as I have family there and have visited several times. The superstition is stupid, but the strength of "family values" is much to be admired.
Since they're finding dead wives for their dead sons, I see no problem with this. Plus, there will be no quarrels, no family violence, no divorce... However, the bit about burning fake money so the dead will have spending money seems problematic: If they actually believe that the dead need money, how can they think the dead would be satisfied with fake money???

You also set off fireworks and kowtow. Remember, while the Chinese may still be suseptible to superstitious traditions, they are not stupid enough to waste real money on useless things. When my wife saw this story she said it shows just how much Chinese hate being alone.
Good find! I never heard of this practice but I'm just an ABC (American Born Chinese). <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(jared2 @ Oct 6 2006, 07:12 AM) </div> I also recall my mom burning fake money at my grandfather's grave long ago.
Who's to say that the Land of the Dead's economy isn't based on the Fake Currency. Maybe it's "real" on the other side.
