So what would you consider good mileage for a used Prius? Stick with the standard "15k a year" rule? Would you try not to buy a used Prius with a certain number of miles - say, above 40k, 50k, 60k? (I know Toyota recommends a checkup at 60k and 100k). EDIT: I'm in Pennsylvania. Deleted info about a possible car of interest because dealership seems shady. Thank you for opinions, this is my first time buying a car.
What I know about the car, I would probably shy away from a car that had few miles (and of course excessive miles). The one mentioned about sounds good assuming it has been maintained properly. Were you able to run a Carfax on it yet? Ask for maintenance records.
Sounds like a reasonable price for that mileage and year. I guess over 120k I'd start worrying. It would be great to know if the car was more of a city or highway car, I guess, but all in all these cars hold up great and I wouldn't worry a lot if the deal was good.
I'm in PA. And I did some research on the dealership and decided it wasn't trustworthy. So I'm back to searching. Still interested in mileage opinions though.
If you drive more than 15K/y, buy a low mileage one. Otherwise get a high mileage Prius is not an issue at all. I bought my 2004 at 110K 2 years ago, now it is 150K. No issue at all. I plan to drive at least another 100K before selling.
I have an 07 with 30K on it. The Car goes to my Toyota Dealer every 6 months for oil change & Rotation. I also had the 30K Service done. The Car Also gets a Full Service Car Wash & Wax every month. I drive in the country 45MPH But do go to Dog Shows on the interstate at 65 - 70 MPH I consider my Prius to be a Gem. Will be selling when I decide which PIP or EV I want to buy.
Thanks. The only reason why I asked is because I wanted to see if you're in a CARB emissions state where you'd have longer (10 year/150K mile HV battery and 15 year/150K mile emissions) warranties. Unfortunately, I believe PA isn't such a state.
First, read through New car buying guide, avoiding dealer scams, new cars, used car buying. Second you can check any Toyota's dealer service history by registering the VIN at Toyota Owners Official Website: Service Coupons, Owners Manuals, Service Scheduling and More. The warranty on the hybrid components is 8 years/100,000 miles. Powertrain is 5/60,000 & 3/36,000 for the rest of the car. The trim level or package of a used Prius is too often overstated. Packages change over the years so find the lists by year here & download them. Mileage doesn't exist in a vacuum. It all depends on the age of the car and the price which is influenced by the option package. Every one of us drives a used Prius. The Prius is a low maintenance car, not a maintenance free car. Fluids should be changed. The 12v battery will need to be replaced. Rarely, a traction battery may need to be replaced out of warranty. Chances are a Prius will be totalled in a collision before it is worn out. I'd look for a 1 owner car with regular maintenance and a good coat of paint. I've got almost 40,000 miles on my 2010 in just about 2 years. It's a high mileage car with a few imperfections because it's a daily driver. At $35000 it's not a bargain. At $10000 it's a steal. At the right price (whatever that is) it's a fair deal but don't dismiss it just because it has higher annual miles. (BTW you can buy my Prius when you can pry it out of my cold dead hands.)
