In the quest to get rid of all the rattles under the dash, I've accidentally broken the mounting tabs that hold the two halves of the housing for the speedo. This looks to be a real mess to repair so i was hoping to find another part around. I'm heading to the dealer to find out how much a replacement is but I'd rather get one from the boneyard. Anyone in the Denver area know of one with a current generation Prius? (On the bright side, I can now have the entire dash removed in under an hour!)
While I don't know any junkyards, have you heard of a substance calles Plastex? http://plastex.home.att.net/ I have not used it myself, but a coworker does work on his motorcycle with it. (It is a Honda PC800 - has a plastic shell with lots of fragile tabs.) It is excellent for replacing broken tabs using an included clay bar as a mold. The stuff attaches very strongly to the original piece. Might be easier than replacing the part, or it could be a huge mess. B)
You can also try eBay. Occasionally you'll see what looks like an entire Prius being sold piecemeal, except for body parts....I.E. someone took apart a totaled car and is selling the parts that are salvagable.
I just tried car-part.com, and they don't come up with a Prius in all of Colorado. Searching all states, I did find 2G HV batteries for as low as $450 though! B)
Thanks for checking. I just ordered the part from the dealer, it might be worth $88.00 to save the hastle of searching cross country for the part.
narf, you took apart the dash? I need some help. How do I remove the plastic that surrounds the screen, clock and hazard light button? My dealer didn't reinstall it back properly and now I have a gap in the bottom between the radio and the clock.
Dude, why the hell would there be a new Prius in a junkyard? Sure there might be one or two that were totalled in accidents, but good luck finding that.
Once you've got the vent panels on either side off you should be able to access the silver-colored diagonally-mounted bolts on either side of the MFD, and remove them. Then the whole MFD module pulls out -- it doesn't come easily, but it's on those same non-self- destructing plastic clips that many other parts are and will come away without eating itself. Then you can realign everything the right way before tightening the bolts back down. . Note that to get the vent panel off that includes the shifter, you probably have to pull the lower drivers-side panel and the power-button one since they hook *over* it. Cumbersome, but doable. . _H*
home all week if you want to come over and we can see what is wrong but it sounds like they didn't put the radio in right. pm me and we can see what time slot is available.
