Mechanic says that the 2014 Prius four has a bad abs module. The pump runs every 2-3 seconds and the dashboard has lights: ABS, traction control, brake. Tried bleeding the brakes at least once but the problem came back in ~24 hours. Preference is to disconnect the fuse and drive without ABS, but when doing so, the car mechanic says that a number of lights come on the dash, including one indicating the hybrid system is impacted. Per mechanic, schematics shows that the ABS module wire comes out of the fuse box and connects to the powertrain control system (PCS), which is not typical. In summary, "if you disconnect the wires from the ABS unit it's going to affect the whole vehicle." I haven't found anything online suggesting that pulling the ABS fuse creates wider issues like he is describing. Does this seem legit? His alternative is to (a) replace ABS module with a used one for ~$900 (incl. labor) or (b) try cutting the ground wire to cut power to the ABS (he said this may not work, especially if the booster is also connected to the ground wire). Any help is appreciated!
If it was just the ABS that was the problem, you might have a decent short-term work-around... But if your pump is already so bad that it has to run every 2-3 seconds, I strongly encourage you to treat this car as broken down and unsafe/unable to be driven and find some other alternative to get around until you get the pump fixed. The ABS problem will be way easier to handle the fix once you actually have a brake system that works well enough to not get you or someone else killed.
So what happens when you drive the car now Do you have a constant beep noise indicating that there's low pressure in the accumulator or is the Gen 3 quiet and all the lights are on and the brake pedal feels funny but the car stops reasonably good maybe like an older car if you remember such a thing. I'm driving a generation two with the same problems you're having and can put easily a hundred miles on it a day if I wanted It stops fine You just have to know you're driving without ABS and if the beep is current and on you don't have power brakes You have brakes of a Dodge truck with a master cylinder mounted on the firewall no brake booster if you remember that sometimes you had to use two feet on the brake pedal many of you will not remember this so it doesn't really bother me if it beeps I allow a few milliseconds more for the car to stop at the stoplight No chance of having an accident nothing like that unless you're just a total spaz and if that's the case you're already scared and you're not driving. Other than that's pretty uneventful usually in the generation 3 you want to replace both of the pieces or you'll replace the piece you think you need to replace and then you'll have the same problem and the lights are on because the other part is leaking internally not externally. So usually what you want to do is buy these two pieces online have them sent to the dealer where you get the biggest discount If you walk into the parts department you're going to pay about 35% more money usually.
The ABS is an integral part of the brakes in your car. You can NOT just turn off the ABS and expect the brakes to work properly. Do not take a shortcut with your brakes. How much is your life worth? Fix it right or get rid of the car. The $900 quoted by your mechanic for used parts is a very good price. A Toyota dealership charges $3500 to $3800 using new parts.
