I have a 2013 Prius 2 that doesn't have the NAV capability. I was disappointed to find that it doesn't have the backup camera either. I would like to add a backup camera and would like to know if I have to replace my head unit when doing so. This would make the whole thing cost prohibitive. Due to disability I am not able to do this myself, any recommendations on how to find someone to do this for me and the cost of it? While I would have preferred to have a NAV unit, I am content to continue using my phone as a NAV device. I don't know if the harness is already there for adding things or not. I wish I had discovered this site before I purchased my car. I apparently purchased stripped down version and would like the finer things.
You don't need to replace the head unit to add a back up cam. There's a sticky in this Audio and Electronics forum for the 2012 Prius and it's the same installation for the 2013 Prius. You'll have to call around and ask for a quote on installation since I'm not sure what's the normal price to install a backup cam for a Prius. Check out Best Buy or your local automotive accessory shop.
Thank you for your response. I saw the sticky and read through it but was unable to determine the answer to my question. I went to Best Buy where I was told that I would have to replace the head unit with one that supports navigation if I wanted a backup camera and that the overall cost would be over $1000.
They are just trying to up-sell you a new head unit. The HU you have in your Prius right now works with a back up cam. They should know better but try looking some place else.
You can add the BU cam to your existing unit, see thread in sticky section for details. FWIW- the Toyota nav is over priced, expensive to update and overall is not highly regarded by most PC members. If my Prius didn't come with nav- I'd spend $250 and get a higher end Garmin with lifetime map updates and traffic with voice command capabilities and never think about the OEM system again.
