I have a 2010 Prius 66k miles that I just love. I guess I should say I love the mpg, everything else is just OK. I have a Ranger pickup I use for hauling the kayak and the dogs and such. I need to move to a one vehicle family for financial reasons and I don't know if the Prius could handle it all. I'm sure everything would be ok except for the kayak. It's only a 10 footer at about 60 pounds but I just don't know about the temporary roof racks????? Thinking maybe I should get rid of both vehicles and get something like an Outback, but losing all that mpg is sickening. Thoughts?????
I'm in the same boat. (No pun intended) I love the mpg's for sure, but I miss having a 4wd truck I can take anywhere. The thing that kills me is my 2010 Prius I bought used has already depreciated by $3.5k and the 2007 Tacoma I traded it in for went up in value by $3.5k. I feel like a jerk for trading it in, at the time it seemed like a great deal swapping it out for the Prius and not paying anything out of pocket for it and saving money at the pump. I not so sure now, I had no idea that the Prius would depreciate so fast. What ever money I thought I'd save in gas in 2 1/2 years has been offset from being depreciated. Each year that goes by the gap keeps getting larger and the fear of replacing the main hybrid battery for around $3k or less bothers me. Tacoma trucks don't seem to lose their value much at all and is less expensive for a mechanic or myself to work on. I feel like I'm stuck with this Prius having to keep it or swallow my pride and take a big loss selling it.
Kinda hard to say without knowing the particulars. If the Ford is paid for, and you go kayaking every day? Keep the truck. If you have a 70-mile commute and you're making payments on both? Uh.....keep the Prius. Priuses have a much higher resale value and they're much easier to sell privately than the Ranger will be, but the G3 will obviously be MUCH cheaper to operate than a P/U. This isn't 6-5 and pick em. One of the vehicles is clearly going to fit YOUR situation much better than the other, and there's a 90-percent chance that you already know which is which. Good Luck!
ETC(SS) asked the right question. If using the kayak is not that frequent, the savings at the gas pump will pay for renting a truck to carry the kayak.
From retired with 81K and wondering if you want to sell your ONLY vehicle..,, To kayaker with a Ford Ranger and a Prius with 66K miles?
