The jet stream has dipped south, over the Gulf of Mexico shore. This means: upper air suction - exactly what is needed to supercharge a thunderstorm inflow of tropic humidity - the fuel for severe storms ugly patch of thunderheads in East Texas headed towards North Alabama It is looking pretty ugly for the next 24-48 hours. Sure hope I'm wrong. Bob Wilson
Looks like the tornadoes are running a couple of hundred miles South. Locally, a little rain and scattered thunder, just wet. Bob Wilson
A few hours ago, a local friend traveling for the holidays sent us a picture of his Texas White Christmas, with a couple inches of snow on the landscape. Our more northerly hopes for some Christmas snow were mostly a bust. News reports reaching here are indicating an icy 21 vehicle chain reaction pileup in OK, a tree fatally falling on a pickup near Houston, and multiple reports of tornado damage.
When driving last night, I saw 2 cars with snow on them. Still carrying it from places further to the north. My gf wanted me to chase them so we could make snowballs.
Hit east on Wednesday took us 11-hrs to get home from Pittsburgh (4-hr trip). We couldn't get over the Appalachians as they had I-68 closed. Decided not to try going up the mountain on the National Hwy Rt40 outside of Uniontown, anyone try that on Wednesday? Other family was stuck on PA Turnpike I76 they got a hotel, so we figured try I-68 but no such luck. Everyone arrived home safely this morning, day late and a dollar short.
I woke up on the 26th in Heber Springs AR with about 8 inches of snow, it was 1 PM before we could get out of the lodge, but then we drove due south to Pine Bluff AR and came over to MS via Lake Village AR, no snow south of Pine Bluff AR. I was home by 8 PM, (280 miles) and never felt the car slip, never saw the traction control light, but I sure moved a lot of snow with the bottom of the car body. The Prius v is lower than other cars and (of course) trucks.
It looks like parts of the Northeast are getting hammered with a snowstorm. Not quite a blizzard and I know they have snow frequently enough to deal with it. Still, looks like Conn through Southern Maine are in for a pretty good accumulation. Bob Wilson
Bob, good that you are not in tornadoed-Mobile or you'd need to use the Prius as a gen! The current snow situation look unusual only in the MO->OH band: National Snow Analyses - NOHRSC - The ultimate source for snow information Everybody else probably knows what to do.
