but after I get it down, I push it closed with my hand on the fin, if that is what it is called. I have noticed some movement/play when closing it. I have started trying to use the area around the Toyoto logo instead

I have gotten used to using the handle on the inside and just pull it down hard enough that its momentum closes it all the way
Try using the license plate. It's a much larger target that the logo. To keep fingerprints off the back of the hatch, I use either the latch ring - the thing which sticks out the center bottom of the hatch, or the inside handle . . . THEN I use the license plate to add proper closing speed/pressure.
