Got home this afternoon and was so excited and proud of the fantastic 58.5 mpg displayed on the dash! After reading the posts here about tire pressure I figured I'd see where mine were at and maybe tweak them a little to squeeze a bit more out of a gallon of gas. You can imagine my surprise when I found the tire pressures ranging from 27.5 PSI to 31 PSI! My Prius is only two weeks old, and I've only put 300 miles on it so far, but I was shocked the dealer didn't check and adjust the tire pressure before delivering the car. So, I made my adjustments: 40 PSI in the front and 36 PSI in the rear, and hopefully will be able to improve upon the current 58 mpg I'm enjoying. Now, a question for the Chemical Engineers in the crowd... My Dealer Window Sticker showed I had the dealer installed option of Nitrogen in my tires (along with a couple BS applications). I added good ole Southern Georgia air! Will there be any ill effects by mixing Nitrogen and Atlanta air (with all it's various polluted particulates)?
had my car a week and set all tires to 40psi = 60.5mpg on my 52 mile RT commute...average speed approx 50mph
ChE here. Air is fine. They use nitrogen in aircraft tires to save a few pounds (mass not psi). Aircraft tires contain much more gas, and a few pounds of weight savings is worth it. The overwhelmingly important thing is to keep them at the right pressures. The only precaution I take is to add air only when the compressor tank is cool (not right after running the compressor to pressure it up). That way, I add less water vapor. Also, when you do top them up, don't forget to reset the TPMS, so it can do its job.
