I will upload pictures when I get a chance, but I was able to install a secondary door seal on all four doors on my 3rd Gen Prius. Here is what I did: 1) Bought 1 package of Metro Moulded MW51634 weatherstripping (5/16" thick x 3/4" wide x 10' long) Metro/Black super weatherstrip MW51634 - Read 1 Reviews on Metro #MW51634 2) Cut the weatherstripping (1 each) slightly longer than the length along the door seal between front and back doors and along the back-door-to-rear-quarter panel joint 3) Cut weatherstrip lengthwise (to make each 5/16" x 3/8") 4) Cleaned area where the seal was going to be applied very well with quik detailer spray 5) Applied weatherstripping to body-painted surface, without pulling any tension during the application (i.e. adhere straight toward body). I would recommend based on adhesion doing it at a minimum of 50°F to ensure the surface is not too cold to adhere well. The effort to close the doors was only slightly increased. The interior noise at highway speed is slightly reduced. On top of that, the doorjam will stay cleaner since it has an outside seal. There is probably a immeasurable reduction in aerodynamic drag (like seam taping), and the whole thing cost $10 (and only used half the package). Enjoy. EDIT: Added photos
do the doors sound less hollow when you close them? i always try to close mine first, because if my wife does, it sounds like a snow shovel hitting the side of a tennesee tin tobacco drying shack.
Yes, the doors do sound more solid. It's not going to sound like a Mercedes, Lexus or Rolls, but it definitely dampens the hollow ring our door seem to have in spades.
Great idea and nice write-up! (Just ordered the strip) I've Dynamatted all 4 doors and it sounds like my BMW door closing.
