A Durango crossed 4 lanes and a median to take a swipe at my husband's 2004 Prius tonight. He hit the front end of the Prius, then was travelling fast enough to spin around and bounce off the back as well. My husband (who's ok, crumple zone worked pretty well) even drove off the road to try avoid him. The car is not drivable and had to be towed away. I am wondering what will happen now. BOTH front and passenger airbags deployed even though no one was in the passenger seat. The damage to the back end appears minimal. It has 85,000 miles on it. Thoughts anyone??
Very sorry to hear about your husband's accident. The car looks like it will be totaled. Glad that your husband reports being OK; if he feels any back or neck pain at all I recommend that he immediately obtain a full medical evaluation.
I am so glad he WALKED away when you look at those pics. He has a bruise on his wrist. Thank goodness for crumple zones. We are really hoping it isn't totalled because we probably owe more money than it is worth We bought it used last Feb. And you know used ones are not easy to find.
Glad to hear your husband is ok. I do think it might be totalled, just looking at the damage (esp. since the coolant thermos is on that side too, adding to the cost). Depends on the insurance company I guess. Ours cars were totalled with less damage than that =(.
Glad the old boy is OK, he will likely be sore tomorrow. This is a good reason to have an agreed value policy. Bad damage, ouch. I won't try to guess what your insurance will do.
It is interesting. In this case SUV driver was going WAY to fast for the weather conditions: snow and ice packed roads. Having 4 wheel drive does not give you the ability to stop on a dime. I did see idiots of all sorts out driving too fast yesterday...not just SUV's. But the funny thing, all the ones in the ditches and plowed into signs were SUV's. The car is totalled. Just heard from the garage, they weren't even done estimating and they had gotten up to $17000. Now we have to take a loss on it and find a new car. Plus, we have to come up with a big chunk to pay sales tax...We have gap insurance on our other Prius. It is a 2008 and we knew it would depreciate fast, but didn't get it on this vehicle since it is a 2004. Well one thing that is humorous about the situation. We are not nearly as mad about our 12 yr. old son scraping a Sam's club cart down the side of car:0) Can't hardly find the scrape now!! mel
Got a check today for more than we paid for our car. It covered the loan and we have $2400 to cover sales taxes. Crazy...but wow!!! Already have a new used one on the way from CarMax. It is the same price we paid for our 2004, but it is a 2006 with leather seats and rear camera (higher miles: 61,000, but that doesn't bother us). Our 2004 had cloth seats and no camera...hubby is happy. He got a bruise on his wrist, but a nicer car. Of course, he also saw his life flash before his eyes!! My girls are ecstatic too because the 2006 is that light green (sorry not familiar with the name of that green). Sometimes things aren't as bad as they seem...
Congratulations on purchasing your new 2006 Silver Pine Mica, sounds like you got a very fair insurance settlement.
Thanks for the heads up on the car color Patrick:0) I used to know the colors, but have been a little delinquent about visiting PriusChat lately!!! Forgot how great everyone is here!!!
It wasn't our insurance company. It was the Durango driver's insurance: State Farm. They really were great. Quick assessment and cut us a check today. Accident occurred Tuesday evening.
Was your husband required to waive financial claims regarding personal injuries incurred in the accident - or does that remain an open issue? If still open I suggest that he allow at least a month to pass before deciding whether he has any other injuries besides the bruise.
The only thing we signed was a release of the title for the car loan to be paid off. There wasn't any other paperwork involved.
I'm glad your husband is OK, and I'm also very impressed with the insurance turn-around time. Glad everything worked out ok for you!
