Embarrassed to own a diesel truck

Had this happen last week...the whole "black smoke pass". I want a bumper sticker that says "I want you to think about me the next time you fill up your truck"

 

I can't stand asshats like that. It's incredible how ignorant they are.

There is nothing wrong with owning a diesel pickup. If I lived closer to work I'd probably own one for work purposes. Unfortunately I'd be a bit self conscious driving it because of the stereotype promoted by the asshats and ignorant rednecks.

 

My car is a tool, it gets me and my cargo to clients efficiently. If you truck is tool, I have nothing but respect for you. If it is an extension of YOUR tool, you have my sympathy.

 

Happened to me last night, but with a holden (gm) diesel 4wd. I was passing the 4wd in the left lane (slow lane in Australia), but it then speed up to overtook me and then cut me off. What I did next was changed to right lane and re-overtook that DF. Went a little faster, he was following me all the way until it was uphill where I kept my speed, and lost him, as he was stuck behind another slow vehicle.

It's been happening lately in Australia with the diesels vs hybrids thing. I think topgear had something to do with that. I don't drive slow, but there are idiots out there who are anti-socials. Involuntary euthanasia anyone?

Like many folks out there, I drive a truck and a G3.
My truck is a 5.3 liter gas burner, so I don't have the factory installed tactical smoke generating system, but my towing needs didn't justify getting an oil burner.

I had a lady one time make a snarky comment about "you pickup truck drivers" while I was loading fuel one day, but I let it slide.

I'm not really embarrassed to drive either vehicle actually, but both communities have their ambassadors that are looking for new ways to perpetuate old stereotypes.

 

I too own a pickup truck along with a Prius.

The Prius is for my wife's daily commutes to work.

The pickup is only driven on occasion. I use it to haul hay, manure or building materials, and to tow my trailer [carrying my tractor]. In the spring I use it daily to haul manure and tractor. But most of the year I only use it maybe weekly.

They are both tools. I am not making any political statements with either vehicle.

Like the chief said: "I'm not really embarrassed to drive either vehicle actually", I agree.

Nobody has cut us off in the Prius and nobody has made any remarks about my pickup.

I agree with what everyone has posted here. I have only really had one encounter with someone in a pick-up truck acting like an asshat, and I think he was having a bad day or something. He kept trying to stare and glare back at me at a red light and I just ignored him.

Again, as long as your truck is used for the purpose which it's built, I don't know of anyone on here that would have any issue with that. We all understand that some jobs and lifestyles require a truck. Where most of us take issue, is the person that drives the big truck to/from their office job everyday and never actually use the truck for its intended purpose.

 

lol, you want to perpetuate old stereotypes then try driving a Prius taxi! Not only are ALL cabbies idiot drivers who cut up everyone (apparantly) but then I have all the negatives stereotypes about Prius drivers too.

As long as they don't try to run you off the road or run over you like those pickup drivers do when you ride a bicycle. The black smoke acceleration is the least problem.

 

Search "smoke switch."

It's a questionable modification that allows drivers to enrich the mixture and cause that bellowing black smoke.

There aren't any kits to do it, but some diesel truck forums have how-tos.

 

Similar thing last week, a old diesel car with vanity plate like BIODSEL smoked me out. At first I thought my Prius had an elec problem.

 

This happened to me a long time ago. Then I saw that the guy had a Jesus fish on his bumper. Fail.

 

I also noticed a lot of owners of American cars/trucks drive like maniacs here in the Bay Area. It's like they're upset about owning one.

 

Maybe it's where you live. Here, and previously in Houston, full size truck drivers are about the same as the overall average. Occasionally there's a bad one, but that's true for all vehicles regardless of mileage.

Cars that I do stay away from:
Soccer moms in SUV's.
Small trucks (Ford Ranger, Chevy S10). I think they have an inferiority complex.
Anything modified, or where the wheels are worth more than the car.

Oh, and my other vehicle is am 05 GM diesel 4x4.

 

Two types of vehicles that make me nervous on the road. The first are HMMVs.

I read an article a few years ago about what mindset of person buys one, and they determined it was largely older people who have realized that their eye-sight, hearing and reflexes are diminishing. They buy these huge things because it makes them feel 'safe'. No matter what they crash into they will safely walk away from the accident.

To me the idea that you are acknowledging that your a road hazard and driving a tank specifically for the purpose of self-survival; tells me that I do not want to be near them.

Soon after I read that article, I was in a doctor's office waiting room, and I asked a gentleman what he thought of his HMMV. He told me all about how safe it made him feel.



The second is 4X4 pickup trucks in the winter. Whenever they came out from a driveway or parking lot, they gun-it spinning their rear tires in the snow/ice, and routinely fishtail. If I see one coming out onto the roadway, I know I must slow down and give these guys both lanes.

They always insist that their 4X4s are so much better for winter driving, but in fact they lose control of their vehicle nearly every time. Their rear end will swing out and nail anyone in the other lane. They are such a road hazard. You have to slow down and give them both lanes, because 90% of them will lose control of their vehicle fishtailing out into the other lane.
