just saw the NBC national news and there was a segment on a refugee from Mexico or Cuba (didnt catch that part) would gerry-rigged a '48 Mercury to float and was trying to sneak into the US. unfortunately also the car was seaworthy it was rather slow and the Coast Guard caught them and sunk the car and deported the two occupants
They were trying to escape from Cuba to Florida and got within 20 miles of the US before getting stopped by the Coast Guard. It was evidently the guy's 2nd try. The previous try was in a '52 truck that he outfitted to float - NBC showed the Coast Guard using it for target practice after they got the people off.
Actually, the MSNBC web site mentions a 51 truck that didn't make it into the USA, and that same guy tried again in 2004 and failed, but finally this past March, he made it to the USA and was granted asylum. And the guy in the 1951 truck is a different guy than this current "crew". http://msnbc.msn.com/id/8136908
