I just need to know the 0W-20 oil that is recommended by Toyota for the Prius is a fully synthetic oil or a mineral one ? I just got back from my service @ the local Toyota dealer and they filled it up with 0W-20 (they used to have 10W-30 earlier) and showed me the container that says part # 08880-83325. They also told me that this is a mineral oil and I just needed to check on your expertise.
Toyota Brand 0w20 - is this full synthetic? | PriusChat In a warm climate, a 5W30 may be preferred, although 0W20 gives better cold starts...
Also the can says SN 0W-20 and the manual recommends SAE 0W-20. Can someone tell me the difference of this too ? Dropbox - 2013-11-26 16.56.39.jpg

Since Mobil 1 lost the lawsuit against Castrol, extra-refined mineral oil is what most of us get when we buy "synthetic" (we can't know for sure because no law requires them to tell us). That said, I'm not aware of any 0W-20 on the market that isn't considered (by the maker at least) to be "synthetic". P.S. Don't bother asking Mobil 1 whether their "synthetic" oils are mineral base or true synthetic base such as polyalphaolefin - they won't tell you - I tried.
I saw in a forum (Bob the oil Guy) someone saying that it is impossible to making 0W viscosity oils from mineral oil and it should be synthetic. I am still confused as no one is supposed to mix mineral and synthetic.
1. "Impossible"? I don't know. But like I said, Mobil won't say. 2. "No one is supposed to mix..". Says who? Never heard of "synthetic blend"? Every auto parts store sell it.
